Currently, one of the world’s most important environmental agreements is being discussed in Busan, South Korea, which is the Global Plastic Pollution Treaty.
Member states of the United Nations are meeting at INC-5 for the final round of negotiations to form an international treaty to end plastic pollution. Back in 2022, the Eco Brixs team were lucky enough to attend one of the earlier negotiation sessions in Nairobi, Kenya.
This treaty is a chance for governments to unite and show they are serious about tackling the dangers of the world’s huge production (and over consumption) of virgin plastic.
As well as tackling plastic pollution, this treaty will also help taper the world’s use of fossil fuels, which in turn will help to phase them out. This is because fossil fuels are used in the production of 90% of plastic. Scarily, the greenhouse gases caused by the plastic production industry are double those caused by the aviation industry!
We’re hoping that world leaders can come together to agree on a Global Plastic Pollution Treaty that is fair and includes the necessary steps, transparency and funding to tackle the world’s over consumption of plastic materials. This is vital for everyone worldwide but even more so for those in poorer communities in countries such as Uganda, where plastics tend to be produced, burned and dumped.
We’ll have our fingers crossed and watch the developments as the event runs from 25th November - 1st December 🤞🏿
