Continuing to clean up plastic waste from Lake Victoria

Last month, we announced the opening of 3 new Community Recycling Centres around Lake Victoria, as we expand our Collection Network to tackle the lake's huge plastic problem. The plastic, which is suffocating the lake, is currently putting people, wildlife and livelihoods at risk.

By expanding our Collection Network, we're giving more people access to recycling facilities (something especially lacking around the lake), which means more plastic can be recycled and more 'green jobs' created for the community, as our closed-loop model allows us to pay for each kilogram of plastic brought to us.

In the photos, you can see the team at work at one of those Collection Sites, where 150 members of the local community have helped clean up 45,500 plastic bottles!

In the space of two months, these 3 sites have removed 2.6 tonnes of plastic waste from Africa's largest lake, whilst creating an economic impact through purchasing the plastic from residents.

We're thrilled by the impact of these sites so far and can't wait to see how much plastic they clear up in the coming months!

If you'd like to support this and simultaneously offset your own plastic usage, you can do so via our partner website, plastic-action.org.
